Practice Log Setup Checklist ============================ A one-page checklist for students, parents, teachers, and coaches to set up a practice log that actually gets filled in and read. [ ] Decide who the log is for: the student only, the student and teacher or coach, or the whole family [ ] Pick one method and commit to it for four weeks: paper notebook, spreadsheet, notes app, or a dedicated practice logging app [ ] Choose where the log physically or digitally lives: on the music stand, in the gym bag, or on the home screen of the phone the student actually carries [ ] Agree on the four fields every entry answers: what I worked on, what the specific goal was, what happened, and what to try next time [ ] Set a simple rating scale for younger students, such as one to five for how the item felt, and write the meaning of each number on the first page [ ] Decide whether minutes are recorded per focus item or per session, and stick with one [ ] Copy this week's assignment or training plan into the log before the first session so the student knows what is expected to appear [ ] Break each assignment into focus items small enough to describe in a few words, such as a passage, a drill, or a skill [ ] Attach a target to each focus item, for example a tempo, a rep count, or a clean run through, so the student knows what done looks like [ ] Agree on a realistic number of sessions per week with the student, then write that number in the log where they can see it [ ] Pick a fixed trigger for practice, such as right after homework or right before dinner, and note it on the first page [ ] Decide how the student will note a session that did not happen, so blank days are honest rather than silently skipped [ ] Set the rule that a short focused session counts as a win and a long unfocused one does not, and make sure the student has heard it out loud [ ] Agree on how the teacher or coach will see the log: shared app access, a photo of the page, or the notebook brought to every lesson [ ] Block two or three minutes at the start of each lesson or training session for reviewing the log together [ ] Commit to mentioning one specific thing from the log in every review so the student knows it is being read [ ] Decide how a mid week question reaches the teacher or coach, and what the reasonable response time is [ ] Agree on the parent's role at home: reminding, listening, or simply staying out of the way, and write it down [ ] Choose a low key way to mark a completed week, and avoid any reward that punishes a single missed day [ ] Put a reminder on the calendar to review the whole setup after two weeks and change anything that is not working
